Fire-Resistant Power Cable: Why Circuit Integrity Matters During a Fire

2026-10-30 16:32:15

When a fire starts in a building, preventing flame spread is only part of the problem.

Fire pumps still need power. Smoke-control fans need to keep running. Emergency lighting and evacuation signs must remain available. Fire lifts, monitoring systems and standby power circuits may also need to operate while the surrounding environment is already exposed to heat, water and physical damage.

That is why a fire-resistant power cable has a different job from an ordinary flame-retardant cable.

The question is no longer simply:

Will the cable spread the fire?

The more important question becomes:

Can the circuit remain operational while the fire is happening?

For critical emergency circuits, that difference is fundamental.

Flame Retardant and Fire Resistant Are Not the Same Thing

The two terms are often used together, but they describe different performance objectives.

Flame-Retardant Cable

A flame-retardant cable is primarily designed to limit flame propagation.

When the ignition source is removed, the cable construction should resist continued burning and reduce the risk of fire spreading along the cable route.

This is important in almost every large cable installation.

But it does not necessarily mean that the electrical circuit will continue operating after the cable has been exposed to severe fire conditions.

Fire-Resistant Cable

A fire-resistant cable is designed around circuit integrity.

It must maintain electrical continuity for a defined period under specified fire-test conditions.

That means the cable may be exposed to intense heat while still being expected to supply power to the equipment at the other end.

For emergency systems, this is often the more important requirement.

A simple way to separate the two is:

Flame retardancy is about limiting fire spread. Fire resistance is about keeping the circuit alive.

Why Circuit Integrity Matters

In a normal power circuit, loss of supply usually means equipment stops.

In a fire emergency, that same loss of supply can affect the systems intended to control the emergency itself.

Examples include:

Firefighting Systems

· fire pumps

· sprinkler-related power circuits

· smoke-control equipment

· smoke exhaust fans

Life-Safety Systems

· emergency lighting

· evacuation signage

· fire lifts

· security and monitoring systems

Critical Continuity Systems

· standby power supplies

· emergency distribution circuits

· essential plant equipment

The purpose of a mineral-insulated fire-resistant cable is therefore not to make every electrical circuit “more fireproof.”

It is to protect circuits where early loss of electrical continuity could have serious consequences.

What Mineral Insulation Changes

A conventional power cable normally relies heavily on polymeric materials for insulation.

A mineral-insulated fire-resistant cable uses an inorganic insulation system.

In the HONGTONG 0.6/1kV design, the basic structure includes:

Copper Conductor → Mineral Insulation → Flame-Retardant Filler → LSZH Flame-Retardant Wrapping → Corrugated Copper Sheath

The mineral insulation is the key difference.

Inorganic insulation materials behave differently from conventional organic cable polymers when exposed to high temperatures. This makes them well suited to cable designs intended to maintain electrical insulation under severe fire conditions.

The construction should still be evaluated as a complete cable system. The conductor, insulation, filler, wrapping and metallic sheath all contribute to the finished product.

Why the Copper Sheath Matters

The outer metallic sheath is another important part of the design.

HONGTONG's mineral-insulated fire-resistant power cable uses a:

Welded and corrugated copper sheath

The copper sheath provides mechanical protection around the insulated cable core and forms a robust metallic barrier around the internal structure.

The corrugated design also addresses a practical installation issue.

A completely rigid metallic construction can make routing and installation difficult, especially where the cable must pass through bends or complex building routes.

Corrugation gives the metal sheath greater installation flexibility while maintaining the protective function of the metallic layer.

For a fire-resistant cable, this balance matters:

Fire performance is only useful if the cable can also be installed properly on the project.

A Real Fire Is More Than a Flame

Fire-test discussions sometimes focus only on temperature.

Actual installations can face much more than heat.

During a fire, a cable route may be exposed to:

· direct flame

· firefighting water

· sprinkler discharge

· falling objects

· mechanical impact

· structural movement

That is why severe fire-resistance assessment can include more than simple flame exposure.

The current HONGTONG product specification states fire-performance capability under:

· direct flame exposure

· flame + water spray

· flame + mechanical impact

with a specified fire-resistance condition of:

950°C / 180 minutes

These conditions are more meaningful than a general statement such as “high-temperature resistant.”

They describe the type of emergency environment the cable is intended to address.

Fire Tests Should Be Read Carefully

A buyer should never compare two fire-resistant cables using only one number.

For example:

950°C

by itself does not describe the complete test.

A useful fire-performance statement should also make clear:

· exposure duration

· whether circuit continuity is required

· whether mechanical impact is included

· whether water spray is included

· applicable test procedure

· acceptance criteria

Two cables may both advertise a high test temperature while being evaluated under very different conditions.

This is why technical buyers should ask:

How long does the cable maintain circuit integrity, and under what test conditions?

That question is much more useful than:

“Is this a fireproof cable?”

Do Not Confuse Fire Resistance With Normal Operating Temperature

Another common misunderstanding is to assume that a cable tested under extremely high fire temperatures is designed to operate continuously at those temperatures.

It is not.

The HONGTONG mineral-insulated fire-resistant power cable is rated:

· Rated voltage: 0.6/1kV

· Maximum system voltage: 1.2kV

· Maximum operating temperature: 90°C

· Short-circuit temperature: 250°C

· Test voltage: 3.5kV / 5 min

· Insulation resistance: ≥100 MΩ·km

The 950°C fire-performance condition relates to emergency fire testing.

It should not be interpreted as the normal continuous conductor operating temperature.

Normal service conditions and emergency fire-survival conditions are two different engineering requirements.

Where Does This Type of Cable Make Sense?

Mineral-insulated fire-resistant cable should be used where continuity during a fire is genuinely required.

Typical applications include:

· high-rise buildings

· airports

· tunnels

· hotels

· shopping centers

· theaters

· power plants

· petrochemical facilities

· metallurgical facilities

· other buildings with critical emergency power circuits

Within those projects, the most relevant circuits are generally not ordinary convenience loads.

They are circuits connected to equipment that must remain available during evacuation, firefighting or emergency response.

This is an important distinction because mineral-insulated fire-resistant cable is a specialized solution.

Using it everywhere would add cost and installation complexity without necessarily improving the overall electrical design.

Fire-Retardant, Fire-Resistant and Mineral-Insulated: Three Different Ideas

These terms should not be treated as three marketing grades of the same property.

Requirement

Main Purpose

Flame Retardant

Limits flame propagation along the cable

Fire Resistant

Maintains electrical circuit integrity for a specified period during fire

Mineral-Insulated Fire-Resistant Cable

Uses an inorganic insulation system and metallic protection to support critical circuit continuity under severe fire conditions

A project may require more than one of these characteristics at the same time.

For example, a cable may need to:

· limit flame propagation

· maintain circuit integrity

· generate low smoke

· use low-halogen or halogen-free materials

· withstand mechanical impact during fire

Each requirement should be verified individually rather than inferred from the general term “fire cable.”

International Standards Need to Be Matched Carefully

Another area where buyers need to be careful is standard selection.

Mineral-insulated cable is a broad product category, but not every international mineral-insulated cable standard applies to every voltage rating and construction.

For example, some classic international mineral-insulated cable standards cover lower rated-voltage ranges and should not automatically be applied to a 0.6/1kV power cable.

The HONGTONG product specification currently references the relevant Chinese standards for this particular 0.6/1kV construction and fire-performance system.

For an international project, the correct approach is therefore not to attach an IEC standard simply because the cable contains mineral insulation.

Instead, buyers should provide:

· rated voltage

· required fire-performance test

· project standard

· local regulatory requirement

· installation environment

The manufacturer can then confirm whether the requested cable construction and test basis match the project.

What Should Buyers Confirm Before Ordering?

A complete inquiry for a mineral-insulated low voltage power cable should include more than conductor size.

Core Configuration

Number of phase and neutral/protective conductors

Cross-Section

Required conductor size

Insulation

Mineral insulation

Metallic Sheath

Copper sheath and required construction

Continuous Length

Required cable length per route

Standard

Project-specified standard and acceptance criteria

This information is especially important because emergency power systems are often reviewed as part of fire-safety approval.

A vague description such as:

Fire-resistant cable, 4-core

is not enough for a proper technical quotation.

A HONGTONG 0.6/1kV Product Example

The current HONGTONG mineral-insulated fire-resistant power cable range includes representative sizes such as:

· 3 × 25 + 1 × 16mm²

· 3 × 50 + 1 × 25mm²

· 3 × 70 + 1 × 35mm²

· 3 × 95 + 1 × 50mm²

The cable uses copper conductors, mineral insulation and a welded corrugated copper sheath.

For project supply, continuous cable lengths can also be discussed according to the installation route and project requirement.

This matters because fewer unnecessary joints can simplify installation planning for critical emergency circuits.

Do Not Select Fire-Resistant Cable by Price Per Meter Alone

For ordinary power distribution, cable price per meter is often an important purchasing metric.

For a critical fire circuit, it is incomplete.

The real cost also includes:

· required fire performance

· installation method

· accessories and terminations

· cable routing

· joint quantity

· maintenance requirements

· expected continuity during an emergency

A lower-cost cable that does not meet the required circuit-integrity condition is not an economical alternative.

It is simply the wrong product.

This is also why a power cable manufacturer should ask about the circuit function before recommending a fire-resistant construction.

Final Thoughts

The most important feature of a mineral-insulated fire-resistant cable is not that it is difficult to burn.

Its purpose is more demanding:

to keep essential electrical circuits operating when the surrounding environment is already affected by fire.

That is why buyers should separate three questions:

· Does the cable limit flame propagation?

· Can it maintain circuit integrity during fire?

· Under exactly what temperature, duration, water and mechanical-impact conditions was that performance assessed?

For critical emergency circuits, those answers matter more than a general “fireproof” label.

When requesting a 0.6/1kV power cable for fire pumps, emergency lighting, smoke-control equipment, fire lifts or other essential systems, provide the required fire-survival conditions together with the electrical specification.

That allows HONGTONG CABLE to review not only the conductor size, but the complete cable construction and fire-performance requirement before quotation.
